On Saturday, January 7th at 11:45 PM, the Calhoun Rural Fire Association responded to an alarm of a possible natural cover fire north on AC Highway from 52 Highway. Calhoun Fire arrived on scene to a large wildland fire in an open field off of the highway. Fire fighters immediately began to create a plan of attack for the fire and split up in teams in order to control the fire lines. After discovering that the fire had spread to a local forest, units were placed inside the forest in an attempt to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes off of the highway. All teams then converged east bound to help in extinguishing the fire approaching the nearby homes. Fire was spotted in several trees in the forest and they were quickly cut down to prevent a fire line break. A brush buggy was also used to help control the fire line by unloading several gallons of water to extinguish the fire.
After several hours of fighting the fire, all units were back in station at 5:30 AM. Unfotunately a couple hours later the fire department was toned back out to the same location for a report of a possible rekindle in the area. The fire was quickly controlled and once more extinguished. There were no further rekindled reported. Approximately 100 acres were believed to be burnt. Click on photo to enlarge!
